The Turbo S introduced the 250 PS specification that moved into the regular 944 Turbo for 1989, while retaining a distinct one-year identity.

How the rating works
The rating uses five fixed production bands. Smaller production runs receive higher ratings. Exact totals and responsibly sourced estimates for this precise version can be rated. Plans, regional totals, lower bounds, disputed figures and broader-family totals remain visible but unclassified. The evidence description is kept separate from the rating so a source limitation cannot change how scarcity is measured.

What creates the sound
Mechanical, induction, turbocharger and exhaust sound should be documented separately where practical.
A factory-stock claim requires evidence for engine, induction, boost control, catalysts and silencers.
Open-licence recordings with incomplete configuration evidence may publish only as Unregistered.
- Inline-4 architecture
- Turbo Cup-derived engine tuning, a limited-slip differential and model-specific chassis equipment made the S a distinct 1988 series.

History and character
Origins and context
944 Turbo S (Type 951) records one precise Porsche performance-car configuration from 1988. The Turbo S introduced the 250 PS specification that moved into the regular 944 Turbo for 1989, while retaining a distinct one-year identity. The familiar badge is not enough by itself: this page binds the name to a generation, engine architecture, transmission and documented publication boundary.
At its centre is a 2,479 cc inline-4 identified as M44/52. Porsche publishes 184 kW (250 PS) for this scope. Turbo Cup-derived engine tuning, a limited-slip differential and model-specific chassis equipment made the S a distinct 1988 series. The figures are not borrowed from an adjacent update or competition derivative.
The engine sits in a longitudinal front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout and drives through a 5-speed manual transaxle. Those facts matter acoustically as well as technically: engine position, driveline length, gearing and cabin structure change which mechanical, induction and exhaust sounds reach a listener.
Engineering and character
Its nearest published lineage neighbour is the 924 Carrera GT (937). The relationship is useful for chronology, but each passport keeps its own engine output, date boundary and production context. Porsche often reused a model family while changing boost systems, cooling, driven wheels or production purpose.
The archive uses the listening cues front-engine, turbocharged, transaxle, cup-derived as orientation, not as proof. A cold start can expose idle control and mechanical texture; acceleration can document induction, boost response and gear changes; a fly-by can place exhaust and tyre sound in an exterior context. None of those capture types establishes factory condition without supporting configuration evidence.
This is the 1988 Turbo S special series. It excludes the earlier 220 PS Turbo, the 1989 regular 250 PS Turbo and modified transaxle cars. This boundary is especially important because many surviving performance Porsches have period upgrades or later modifications. An openly licensed recording can still contribute to the historical record when its exact state is uncertain, but it will carry a visible Unregistered note until documentary evidence resolves the match.
Legacy and identity
It asks the community for cold start, acceleration and fly-by recordings, together with photos, source documents and corrections.
The documentary image follows the same discipline. The picture illustrates the exact model without being treated as evidence for the specification of every surviving car.
Preservation here means keeping claims separable and correctable. Manufacturer sources establish the technical baseline; an independent exact-model reference checks how the identity is described outside the factory archive; claim dispositions disclose remaining uncertainty. Readers can appreciate the car as engineering history while contributors can strengthen the page without silently replacing facts or weakening rights controls.
