How the rating works

The rating uses five fixed production bands. Smaller production runs receive higher ratings. Exact totals and responsibly sourced estimates for this precise version can be rated. Plans, regional totals, lower bounds, disputed figures and broader-family totals remain visible but unclassified. The evidence description is kept separate from the rating so a source limitation cannot change how scarcity is measured.

History and character

Origins and context

Porsche revealed the 918 Spyder concept at Geneva in 2010 and placed the production car on sale in late 2013. It followed the Carrera GT in the company’s halo-car sequence, yet it rejected the idea that electrification and emotional performance had to occupy separate categories. Porsche built the car as a plug-in hybrid technology platform, using electrical machines for efficiency, front-axle drive and torque response while a racing-derived V8 provided the high-speed mechanical centre. Exactly 918 production cars defined the planned series.

The M18/00 combustion engine is a 4,593 cc, 90-degree naturally aspirated V8 derived from the RS Spyder LMP2 racing engine. It produces 447 kW (608 PS) at 8,700 rpm, uses a flat-plane crankshaft and weighs about 135 kg. Two electric machines contribute a combined 210 kW, one integrated with the rear driveline and one driving the front axle. Total system output is 652 kW (887 PS), a value that cannot be recreated by simply adding peak component outputs occurring under different conditions.

A liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery with 6.8 kWh capacity enabled around 30 kilometres or more of electric driving in the original test context. Five operating modes coordinated electric-only travel, hybrid efficiency, performance and circuit strategy. The front motor provided independently controllable all-wheel drive, while the rear combustion and electric power passed through a seven-speed PDK hybrid transaxle. Porsche’s boost strategy managed stored energy so repeated acceleration remained a deliberate control problem rather than a one-use headline.

Engineering and character

The structure used a carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic monocoque, with adaptive rear-axle steering and variable aerodynamics integrated into the chassis. The optional Weissach Package reduced mass and changed trim and aerodynamic details, so its figures should not be applied to a standard 918. In September 2013 Porsche recorded 6:57 on the Nürburgring Nordschleife using road-approved production tyres, the first globally homologated production car below seven minutes under the company’s stated protocol. Context belongs with the number.

The V8’s “top pipes” exit above the engine, shortening the hot-gas route, reducing back pressure and rejecting heat away from the underbody. Their placement gives the 918 a distinctive close-coupled exhaust character, while the front and rear motors add inverter and reduction-gear tones during electric and blended operation. A premium recording must identify drive mode, battery state, combustion-engine temperature and roof configuration. Capturing only a full-throttle V8 pass would omit the hybrid transitions that make this exact car historically significant.

Production ended in June 2015 after 21 months. The 918 connects Porsche’s 911 GT3 R Hybrid and RS Spyder competition learning to later electrified road cars, but it should not be described as an early Taycan. The Taycan is a battery-electric four-door using an 800-volt architecture; the 918 is a mid-engined plug-in hybrid roadster designed around the controlled cooperation of three propulsion sources. Both demonstrate technology transfer, but their energy, packaging and sonic stories are distinct.

Legacy and identity

The focus here is the 2013–2015 Type 918 road car with the M18/00 V8 and dual electric motors. It separates standard and Weissach equipment and excludes prototypes, RS Spyder racers and altered exhaust systems. The broader story explains why hybridisation made the car faster rather than merely more economical. The component outputs, battery, drive modes, top-pipe architecture and lap protocol supply the exact evidence needed to understand what Porsche built—and what a surviving individual example must document.
