How the rating works
The rating uses five fixed production bands. Smaller production runs receive higher ratings. Exact totals and responsibly sourced estimates for this precise version can be rated. Plans, regional totals, lower bounds, disputed figures and broader-family totals remain visible but unclassified. The evidence description is kept separate from the rating so a source limitation cannot change how scarcity is measured.

C 55 AMG W203 saloon and S203 estate combined; saloon count not isolated

Listening descriptors remain editorial; architecture and output claims trace to the cited manufacturer material.
The C 55 AMG replaced the C 32 in 2004 as part of the W203 model update, bringing a naturally aspirated V8 back to the compact AMG saloon. Mercedes-Benz describes it as the first eight-cylinder model of the 203 series. Fitting the larger engine required a visibly longer front structure derived in part from CLK packaging, giving the car proportions subtly different from an ordinary facelift W203. Its identity is therefore written into the body as well as the badge and powertrain.
The M113 E55 displaces 5,439 cc and produces 270 kW (367 PS). Unlike the supercharged M113K used in larger 55 AMG flagships of the period, this C-Class application is naturally aspirated. A five-speed automatic sends power to the rear wheels. That boundary is important because the shared “55” designation encourages incorrect claims of supercharger hardware or 476 PS. The C 55’s character comes from displacement, response and compact installation rather than the boosted output of an E 55 or CLS 55.
AMG strengthened the chassis, brakes and cooling for the V8 while giving the 2004 car more explicit performance styling. Mercedes-Benz later identified that stronger visual separation as a direction subsequent AMG models would continue. The road saloon and estate share the core model but differ in body, mass and cabin acoustics. The focus here is the W203 saloon; the Formula 1 Medical Car commonly pictured in histories was an estate with specialised emergency equipment and cannot establish saloon specification.
Engineering and character
The engine’s large displacement creates broad torque without boost-control transitions, and the five-speed automatic uses relatively long ratios. The result is an immediate, low-frequency V8 response followed by a smooth climb rather than the supercharger whine of the C 32 or rapid multi-ratio events of later AMG gearboxes. Factory exhaust tuning is restrained. Removed resonators, secondary catalysts or aftermarket rear boxes can dominate online recordings, so provenance must identify the entire exhaust path and market emissions equipment.
The C 55 sits between the 354 PS supercharged V6 C 32 and the 457 PS W204 C 63. Both successors and predecessor are more famous for headline engineering: forced induction in one case, a clean-sheet AMG M156 in the other. The C 55 instead represents a highly developed application of the durable Mercedes M113 family. That makes it valuable to the lineage as an example of packaging and calibration, not merely a smaller-output preview of the W204.
Exact identity also requires separating it from the W202 C 55, a rarer late-1990s AMG derivative rated at 347 PS, and from CLK 55 models using related hardware. Model code 203.076, 270 kW output and the W203 body belong together. A V8 swap into a C 32 shell may mimic some sensations but lacks factory front structure, cooling, type approval and provenance. Premium documentation treats such a car honestly as a modification rather than erasing the achievement involved in the production package.
Legacy and identity
The focus here is the 2004–2007 W203 / 203.076 C 55 AMG saloon with naturally aspirated M113 E55 and five-speed automatic. It excludes the estate, W202 C 55, supercharged 55 AMGs, CLK relatives and engine-swapped W203s. The broader story explains the return of eight cylinders before the C 63 era. Aspiration, body structure, model code and exhaust provenance protect a deceptively subtle car from being described with the specifications of louder and more powerful relatives.
