How rare is it?

A simple 1–5 rating based on completed worldwide production for this exact version. Price and desirability are not included.

How the rating works

The rating uses five fixed production bands. Smaller production runs receive higher ratings. Exact totals and responsibly sourced estimates for this precise version can be rated. Plans, regional totals, lower bounds, disputed figures and broader-family totals remain visible but unclassified. The evidence description is kept separate from the rating so a source limitation cannot change how scarcity is measured.

History and character

Origins and context

Mercedes-Benz introduced the C 43 AMG in 1997 as the successor to the inline-six C 36 and the first C-Class powered by a V8. The change established an engine layout that would define several later generations, but the original W202 expression was compact and relatively discreet. It arrived after Mercedes-Benz had taken a majority stake in AMG, making series integration deeper than on the C 36 while preserving the hand-finished, limited-volume character associated with Affalterbach.

The M113 E43 is a 4,266 cc, 90-degree naturally aspirated V8 producing 225 kW (306 PS). Its three-valve cylinder heads and twin-spark ignition prioritised a broad torque curve and emissions performance rather than the four-valve, high-rev architecture used in some earlier AMG engines. A five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmitted power to the rear wheels. Those details distinguish it from the 1998 W202 C 55 AMG conversion, whose larger displacement and 347 PS output belong to a much rarer derivative.

Packaging a V8 into the compact W202 shell required more than placing a larger engine between the front suspension towers. Cooling, springs, dampers, brakes, final drive and electronic control were matched to the added mass and torque. The visual treatment remained close to the facelift C-Class, so badges and wheels are weak evidence of identity on their own. Model code 202.033, drivetrain records and engine documentation matter when ordinary W202s can be cosmetically converted with readily available AMG parts.

Engineering and character

The five-speed automatic is central to its operating character. With a broad naturally aspirated delivery and fewer ratios than later multi-clutch systems, acceleration builds through longer gears and clear torque-converter phases. The car’s purpose was high-speed, all-weather road performance with saloon usability, not a manual track special. Comparing shift speed directly with a modern MCT or dual-clutch unit misses how the gearbox, engine and chassis were calibrated as one late-1990s production system.

Acoustically, the M113 produces a rounded, low-order V8 pulse layered with subdued factory induction and exhaust tuning. Standard silencers keep the car more restrained than many surviving modified examples suggest. Market catalysts, replacement rear boxes and engine mounts can materially affect recordings, as can saloon versus estate body resonance.

In lineage terms, the C 43 follows the first jointly developed C 36 and precedes the W203 C 32 AMG, which unexpectedly changed to a supercharged V6. It is therefore both the first V8 C-Class and not the beginning of an uninterrupted V8 sequence. The naturally aspirated V8 returned in the W203 C 55 and grew into the clean-sheet M156-powered W204 C 63. Holding those branches apart makes the C 43 more interesting than a mere stepping stone.

Legacy and identity

The focus here is the 1997–2000 W202 / 202.033 C 43 AMG saloon with 4.3-litre M113 and five-speed automatic. It excludes the C 36, rare W202 C 55, estate body, CLK relatives and later V8 swaps. The broader story explains why the first factory V8 C-Class matters. The three-valve engine, body code and restrained production configuration provide a reliable basis for originality research without importing specifications from visually similar or more powerful AMG models.
