R / production rarity

How rare is it?

A simple 1–5 rating based on completed worldwide production for this exact version. Price and desirability are not included.

How the rating works

The rating uses five fixed production bands. Smaller production runs receive higher ratings. Exact totals and responsibly sourced estimates for this precise version can be rated. Plans, regional totals, lower bounds, disputed figures and broader-family totals remain visible but unclassified. The evidence description is kept separate from the rating so a source limitation cannot change how scarcity is measured.

What creates the sound

Mechanical, induction, transmission and exhaust sound should be documented separately where practical.

A factory-stock claim requires evidence for engine, intake, catalysts, gearbox and silencers.

Open-licence recordings with incomplete configuration evidence may publish only as Unregistered.

History and character

Origins and context

458 Italia (F142) records one precise Ferrari performance-car configuration from 2009–2015. The 458 Italia paired Ferrari’s final regular-production naturally aspirated V8 berlinetta engine with its first dual-clutch road-car transmission.

At its centre is a 4,499 cc naturally aspirated v8 identified as F136FB. Ferrari publishes 419 kW (570 CV) for this scope and 540 Nm. Direct injection, a 9,000 rpm speed ceiling, dual-clutch transmission and integrated vehicle controls defined Ferrari’s new-generation V8 berlinetta.

The engine is installed in a longitudinal rear-mid engine, rear-wheel drive layout and works through a 7-speed F1 dual-clutch. Those facts matter acoustically as well as technically: engine position, firing order, induction, gear selection and cabin structure all affect what reaches a listener.

Engineering and character

Its nearest passport neighbour in this published sequence is the 430 Scuderia. That relationship supplies chronology, not interchangeable specifications. Ferrari repeatedly evolved its V8 and twelve-cylinder families through body styles, competition derivatives and later technical phases. Keeping each boundary visible prevents attractive but incompatible facts or recordings from migrating between cars.

The listening cues flat-plane V8, dual-clutch, direct injection, 9,000 rpm are orientation rather than proof. A cold start can expose idle control and mechanical texture; acceleration can document induction, combustion and shift behaviour; a fly-by can place exhaust and tyre sound in an exterior context.

The focus here is the 458 Italia coupé. It excludes the Spider, Speciale, Speciale A, Challenge and GT racing cars, plus altered exhaust systems. Many surviving Ferraris have replacement exhausts or other period and modern changes.

Legacy and identity

It invites cold start, acceleration and fly-by recordings, plus photographs, documents and corrections.

Contributors are therefore asked for capture date, general environment, microphone and recorder details, engine temperature, operating load and any known deviation from factory specification. Private location and ownership details stay out of the public record. This practical metadata lets later researchers distinguish mechanical character from recording technique while leaving room for a corrected identity or a better documented replacement.

Preservation means keeping each claim inspectable and correctable.
